Gather ‘round for the SunHAT EcoPeformance Fest Keynote with Moira Finucane. Taking place among the trees, this performatic address invites a chorus of artistic and community voices to reflect and respond to provocations of Art versus Extinction, based on a suite of works the artist has developed over the last ten years. Moira Finucane was an artist in residence at The Ringling in 2023, and shares decades of cultural production experience on the intersection of performance and human rights to provide a poetic analysis of rhetorical strategies of storytelling around climate change, ecology and environmental justice. Her brave and visionary artistic and social practice bring wildness and intellectual rigor that are inclusive and inspirational.
Internationally renowned for her arresting mix of provocation and entertainment, Moira Finucane's company, The House of Finucane & Smith Unlimited creates “salons of humanity”— intimate theatrical spectacles, dark drama, beyond-genre cabaret and provocative variety—hijacking myriad art forms and engaging unique and extraordinary artists to create indelible visions of humanity, freedom, power and desire.
Finucane's work has been presented in 19 countries and her company has become the first Australian work to be presented at major festivals in Latin America, Europe and China. Finucane & Smith won critical acclaim in 13 languages and been the recipient of The Patrick White Playwright Award, 9 Green Room Awards, International Theatre Institute's CHAMACO Award for International Presentation of the Year 2015 (Cuba), the Golden Potato Award for cultural services to rural communities, and her Art vs Extinction suite was chosen for the Australian Exhibit Prague Quadrennial 2019.
Finucane's Art vs Extinction work springs from her background in environmental science, human rights and transformative art. This work has taken her from Antarctica to becoming Australia’s inaugural Creative Fellow National Gallery Victoria and inaugural Creative Fellow Museums Victoria; directing Denmark’s first Women, Climate and Art Residency. Finucane is currently a PhD candidate investigating Art vs Extinction with scientists and artists around the world.
